This is a video showing the magnetic signature that developed on a steel rod after its initial use in a GEET fuel reforming reactor. Partially ionized vapours of a hydrocarbon fuel , water and an electrolyte are allowed to naturally develop a vortex in a gap between the rod and the reactor inner tube. The vortexing ionized vapours act like a solenoid coil with electric current and cause the rod to become magnetized with the magnetic pole positions set by the rea between where the vapours are getting cracked. A very small compass works better at showing the exact pole positions. This steel rod developed and holds the magnetic signature well because of the magnetic hysterisis of the steel. That might have been a "hot rolled" steel rod which might have more magnetic hysterisis than cast iron or cold rolled steel, so holds the signature better. A cast iron rod might work even better in the reactor but since it has very low magnetic hysterisis, even a weak magnetic field from the Earth or the compass needle might re-magnetize the iron and so it can not hold a signature well to see the pole positions for to cut a new rod.
